11 Effective Principles for Character Education

There is no single script for effective character education, but there are some important basic principles. The following eleven principles serve as criteria  for our schools that help implement an effective plan for character education.

1. Character education promotes core ethical values as the basis of good character.

2. "Character" must be comprehensively defined to include thinking, feeling, and behavior.

3. Effective character education requires an intentional, proactive, and comprehensive approach that promotes the core values in all phases of school life.

4. Our school is a caring community.

5. To develop character, students need opportunities for moral action.

6. Effective character education includes a meaningful and challenging academic curriculum that respects all learners and helps them succeed.

7. Character education strives to develop students' intrinsic motivation.

8. The school staff has become a learning and moral community in which all share responsibility for character education and attempt to adhere to the same core values that guide the education of our students.

9. Character education requires moral leadership from both staff and students.

10. Our schools recruit parents and community members as full partners in the character-building effort.

11. Evaluation of character education assesses the character of the school, the school staff's functioning as character educators, and the extent to which our students manifest good character.

What is Character Education?

Character education is the deliberate effort to develop virtues that are good for the student and good for the staff. The objective goodness of virtues is based on the fact that they:

  • Affirm our human dignity
  • Promote the well-being and happiness of the individual
  • Serve the common good
  • Define our rights and obligations
  • Meet the classical ethical tests of reversibility (Would you want to be treated this way?) and universalizability (Would you want all persons to act this way in a similar situation?).
